👷 Step 1: Register as a Plumbing Apprentice

Anyone starting their plumbing career in Texas must first register with the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE).

Register as a Plumbing Apprentice

  • Must be at least 16 years old

  • Must be employed under a licensed plumber

  • Begin tracking on-the-job experience

🪛 Step 2: Accumulate Experience

To qualify for various licenses:

  • Tradesman License: 4,000 hours + completion of approved courses

  • Journeyman License: 8,000 hours under a Master Plumber

  • Experience must be tracked and verified

🧰 TSBPE requires a signed affidavit from your supervising plumber with your application.

📚 Step 4: Take and Pass the Exam

  • Tradesman: written exam only

  • Journeyman: written + practical exam

📘 Study topics include code, installation, backflow prevention, water supply, and DWV systems.

🏆 Step 5: Receive Your License

  • TSBPE will issue your license after passing the exams

  • Must renew annually

  • Must complete 6 hours of Continuing Education each year
