🧊 Step 1: Get Started as a Registered Technician (Optional but Recommended)
If you’re just getting started in HVAC, it’s a good idea to register as a Certified Technician to begin earning experience hours.
✅ Register as a Certified Technician (TDLR)
No exam required
Must be at least 18 years old
Must be employed by a licensed HVAC contractor
Helps track your hours toward a license
🔧 Step 2: Accumulate Experience & EPA Certification
To apply for a license, you must have:
48 months of practical experience under a licensed HVAC contractor,
OR12 months as a certified technician + 36 months of additional verified experience
🧪 You’ll also need an EPA 608 Certification to handle refrigerants (required before applying for a license):

📝 Step 3: Choose a License Type
Class A License – work on any size cooling/heating system
Class B License – limited to systems below 25 tons (cooling) and 1.5M BTU (heating)
✅ Apply for an HVAC Contractor License (TDLR)
💵 Application Fee: $115 (as of 2025)
📚 Step 4: Take the PSI Contractor Exam
After TDLR approves your application, you’ll schedule your exam with PSI.

Multiple choice format
Topics: electrical theory, code, HVAC installation & service
Must pass both Business & Law and Trade Knowledge sections
🏆 Step 5: Get Licensed & Start Working
License is issued after passing exams
Must renew annually
Must complete 8 hours of Continuing Education each year
