Welcome to your step-by-step guide to becoming a licensed electrician in Texas. Whether you're just getting started as an apprentice or ready to level up to journeyman, this guide has you covered.
🛠️ Step 1: Start as an Electrical Apprentice
Before you can become licensed, you must first register as an Apprentice with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).
Apprentice Requirements:
Must be at least 16 years old.
Must submit an Apprentice Electrician Registration Application.
No exam required at this stage.

🔥 Step 2: Complete Required On-the-Job Training Hours
To qualify for your Journeyman Electrician license, you must complete:
8,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a licensed Master Electrician.
📝 Important:
Hours must be properly logged.
Supervisor must verify and sign off on hours.
You must maintain an active Apprentice License during this time.
📝 Step 3: Prepare for Your Journeyman License Application
Once you have completed the required hours:

Supervisor sign-off documents
✅ Complete the Application:

$30 (as of 2025)
📚 Step 4: Schedule and Pass the Journeyman Electrician Exam
After your application is approved:
You will receive instructions to schedule your Journeyman Electrician Exam with PSI Exams.
Exam Format:
80 multiple choice questions
Open-book (2023 National Electrical Code Book allowed)
Time limit: 4 hours
Passing score: 70%

🏆 Step 5: Receive Your Journeyman Electrician License
✅ After passing the exam, TDLR will issue your official Journeyman Electrician License.
✅ Your license must be renewed annually.
✅ 4 hours of Continuing Education are required each year to maintain an active license.

Work under a Master Electrician: Journeyman electricians must continue working under a Master until they apply for a Master license themselves.
