Dental Assistant (DA) – Texas Overview
Smile — your career in dentistry starts here.
Dental Assistants play a hands-on role in patient care, X-rays, sterilization, and chairside support. In Texas, there are clear steps to follow to become certified and expand your scope.
3 Steps to Get Certified
Step 1: Start with On-the-Job Training or a Formal Program
While not always required, many employers prefer candidates who complete a Dental Assisting program approved by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners (TSBDE).
Step 2: Get Registered as a Dental Assistant (RDA)
Apply with the TSBDE and complete a Jurisprudence Assessment. You’ll also need:
CPR Certification
Proof of training (school or on-the-job)
Step 3: Add Certifications to Expand Duties
To take X-rays or perform coronal polishing, you’ll need specific certifications:
Radiology
Nitrous Monitoring
Pit & Fissure Sealants
